I think the education here is better than in the US. Here our teachers really care about teaching. If they didn't care, they would go to a better paying job in industry. They answer all our questions very well. At MIT, our professors were focused on their research. They would come to class, give a hard-to-understand lecture, often to a large class, and leave, leaving us with difficult sets of problems to figure out on our own.

At MIT a student usually has 16 weekly hours of class, here it is 19 1/2.  And of the 16 hours at MIT, 4 are with a teaching assitent, who usually does not know that much more than the other students.  Here we get real professors all the time.

I know the teachers here quite well. Professor Kulisz even devoted two hours of his time to me. At MIT, my thesis advisor was Nobel laureate Rainer Weiss, but I only spoke to him twice. Once when I joined his group and once when he signed my thesis. Here I talk to lecturers every week.

The Silesian University of Technology is very safety-oriented. We're not even allowed to drink water in front of our computers. At MIT, I could have died working on a lathe wearing a tie. They take safety very seriously here.

The program here is also much better than what I had at UC. Berkeley. I thank Intel for guiding the faculty towards curriculum choices that are highly relevant to the industry. We had too many math classes there. Homework here is mostly computer based. And we have math where it should be, in the digital signal processing classroom.

Is the education here perfect? NO! Too much homework. This was fine in the winter, but now that the sun is out, I want to ride my bike, not go home and work on Verilog. But as they say in the USA. "No pain, no gain!"

In the USA, a master's degree in electrical engineering would cost $60,000 a year, or $120K for two years.   Here it is free.  Typically, US students start their careers in debt. Here the Polish government is kind enough to pay for it.

Uważam, że edukacja tutaj jest lepsza niż w Stanach.    Tutaj nasi nauczyciele naprawdę dbają o nauczanie.  Gdyby im nie zależało, poszliby do lepiej płatnej pracy w przemyśle.   Bardzo dobrze odpowiadają na wszystkie nasze pytania. W MIT nasi profesorowie byli skupieni na swoich badaniach.  Przychodzili na zajęcia, dawali trudny do zrozumienia wykład, często dla dużej klasy, i wychodzili, zostawiając nas z trudnymi zestawami problemów do samodzielnego rozgryzienia.  

 

Tutaj znam nauczycieli całkiem dobrze.    Profesor Kulisz poświęcił mi nawet dwie godziny swojego czasu.   W MIT moim promotorem pracy licencjackiej był noblista Rainer Weiss, ale rozmawiałem z nim tylko dwa razy.  Raz, gdy dołączyłem do jego grupy, i raz, gdy podpisał moją pracę dyplomową.  Tutaj rozmawiam z wykładowcami co tydzień.  

 

Politechnika Śląska jest bardzo zorientowana na bezpieczeństwo.  Nie wolno nam nawet pić wody przed komputerami.   W MIT mogłem zginąć pracując na tokarce w krawacie.  Tutaj traktują bezpieczeństwo bardzo poważnie.  

 

Program tutaj jest też o wiele lepszy niż to, co miałem na UC. Berkeley.  Dziękuję Intelowi za poprowadzenie wydziału w kierunku wyboru programu nauczania, który jest bardzo istotny dla przemysłu.  Tam mieliśmy zbyt wiele zajęć z matematyki.  Tutaj zadania domowe są w większości oparte na komputerach.  I mamy matematykę, tam gdzie powinna być, w klasie cyfrowego przetwarzania sygnałów.

 

Czy tutejsza edukacja jest idealna?  Nie!  Za dużo pracy domowej. To było w porządku w zimie, ale teraz, kiedy słońce jest na zewnątrz, chcę jeździć na rowerze, a nie iść do domu i pracować nad Verilogiem.  Ale jak mówią w USA. "No pain no gain!"

 

W USA tytuł magistra inżyniera elektryka kosztowałby 60 000 dolarów, czyli około 250 000 złotych.  Zazwyczaj studenci zaczynają karierę w długach.   Tutaj polski rząd jest na tyle uprzejmy, że za to płaci.
